Restore from a Google Drive backup
To restore a Google Drive backup successfully, you need to use the same phone number and Google account that was used to create the backup.
To restore a backup:
- Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
- Open WhatsApp, then verify your number.
- When prompted, tap RESTORE to recover chats and media from Google Drive.
- After the restore process is complete, tap CONTINUE. Your chat will be displayed after the initialization process is complete.
- WhatsApp will start recovering media files once the chat is restored.
If you install WhatsApp without a previous backup from Google Drive, WhatsApp will automatically restore from the local backup file.
Restoring from local backup
If you want to use a local backup, you'll need to transfer all your files to your phone using a computer, file explorer, or SD card.
Notes:
- Your phone will store local backup files created in the last seven days.
- Local backup will be created automatically every day at 02.00 and saved as a file on your phone.
- If the data is not saved in the /sdcard/WhatsApp/ folder, you may find it in the "internal storage" or "main storage" folder.
Restoring an older local backup (not the newest one)
If you want to restore a local backup, but not the most recent one, you need to perform the following steps:
- Download a file manager app.
- In the file manager app, go to sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. If the data is not stored on the SD card, you may be able to find it in "internal storage" or "main storage", not on the SD card.
- Rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. It is possible that older backups use an older protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. Do not change the crypt extension number.
- Uninstall and reinstall the WhatsApp application.
- Tap RESTORE when prompted.
