How to Recover Chat History on Whatsapp Application | Click More

Restore from a Google Drive backup

To restore a Google Drive backup successfully, you need to use the same phone number and Google account that was used to create the backup.

To restore a backup:
  1. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
  2. Open WhatsApp, then verify your number.
  3. When prompted, tap RESTORE to recover chats and media from Google Drive.
  4. After the restore process is complete, tap CONTINUE. Your chat will be displayed after the initialization process is complete.
  5. WhatsApp will start recovering media files once the chat is restored.
If you install WhatsApp without a previous backup from Google Drive, WhatsApp will automatically restore from the local backup file.

Restoring from local backup

If you want to use a local backup, you'll need to transfer all your files to your phone using a computer, file explorer, or SD card.
  1. Your phone will store local backup files created in the last seven days.
  2. Local backup will be created automatically every day at 02.00 and saved as a file on your phone.
  3. If the data is not saved in the /sdcard/WhatsApp/ folder, you may find it in the "internal storage" or "main storage" folder.

Restoring an older local backup (not the newest one)

If you want to restore a local backup, but not the most recent one, you need to perform the following steps:
  1. Download a file manager app.
  2. In the file manager app, go to sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. If the data is not stored on the SD card, you may be able to find it in "internal storage" or "main storage", not on the SD card.
  3. Rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. It is possible that older backups use an older protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. Do not change the crypt extension number.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall the WhatsApp application.
  5. Tap RESTORE when prompted.
